![]() "Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda" |
Telash, the new Spanish-language theater company in collaboration with UNC Asheville, will stage "Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda" ("Between Pancho Villa and a Naked Woman") at 8 p.m. September 10-11 at UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union Cafe. It is the company’s first production and will be presented entirely in Spanish. The event is free and open to the public.
Telash was formed earlier this year as a forum for the UNC Asheville and local Latino communities to produce contemporary Spanish and Latin American plays. The theater company’s goal is to bridge the gaps between diverse Asheville communities through exploration and presentation of theater arts in Spanish. The group received support from UNC Asheville’s Center for Teaching and Learning, UNC Asheville’s Foreign Languages Department and Asheville Community Theatre’s 35below.
"Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda" was written by celebrated comtemporary Mexican playwright Sabina Berman. In this comedy, Adrian, an otherwise progressive-thinking intellectual, is haunted by his machista alter-ego, Pancho Villa, as he attempts to maintain a relationship with Gina. Gina, however, has her own ideas about the relationship, which are in stark contrast to those of the Mexican icon. Cultural and political allusions, as well as a philosophical exploration of identity, weave through this witty show.
Cast members are Ricardo Rosero as Adrian, Lule Rosenblum as Gina and Roberto Escobar as Pancho. Other cast members include UNC Asheville senior Rachel Ersoff, Maria Martinez, Leonilde Moreno, Hugo Ramirez, and UNC Asheville senior Paulette Wisnowski. The play is directed by Greta Trautmann, UNC Asheville assistant professor of Spanish. The technical crew includes Sandra Brown, UNC Asheville adjunct professor of Spanish; and UNC Asheville students Tracey Speicher and Julia Taylor.
For more information or for a free ticket, call Trautmann at 828/251-6195 or Brown at 232-9182.
