N.C. Center for Creative Retirement Offers Free Computer Literacy ClassesRegistration is now open for the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement’s free computer literacy classes for underserved adults ages 50 and over. Funded through a grant from Salomon Smith Barney, the classes are designed to reach local low-income and minority seniors. Space is limited. Application deadline is January 12. Five courses are available this session. Beginner classes meet from 10 a.m.-noon Mondays or 3-5 p.m. on Thursdays. Advanced beginner classes meet from 2-4 p.m. on Mondays, 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, or 9-11 a.m. on Thursdays. Each class meets once a week for six weeks. The classes will meet in the Reuter Center on the UNC Asheville campus beginning the week of January 26. To date, more than 200 seniors have participated in nine computer literacy courses. Classes are taught by skilled UNCA undergraduates who are trained and supervised by campus experts. Participants will learn basic computer skills, how to use e-mail and the Internet. They will also find out how to access free public computers in the area. Local Dial-A-Ride bus service is available to the Reuter Center. Call the Asheville Transit Authority at 828/253-5691 to request drop off or pick up at the Reuter Center. To request an application for a computer literacy class, call the N.C.
