UNC Asheville Kicks Off Annual Philosophy Lecture Series

Al Iosue, M.D., head of the Institute for Applied Philosophy in Hendersonville, will kick off UNC Asheville’s annual philosophy lecture series with a talk on "The Terms of Experience," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at UNC Asheville Kellogg Center, 11 Broyles Rd., Hendersonville. An open discussion will follow his talk.

The program is part of a year long, nine part series co-sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Philosophy Department and the Institute for Applied Philosophy. The series, "Reflecting on and Learning from Experience," is designed to foster discussion on philosophically significant issues of the day. In previous years, the talks were held on Wednesday evenings. The 2004-05 series will be held on Tuesday evenings. All events are open to the public. A donation of $5 will be suggested at the door.

-- October 5: "Embodiment and Experience," Melissa Burchard, UNC Asheville assistant professor of philosophy

-- November 9: "Aesthetic Experiences," Sarah Worth, Furman University professor of philosophy

-- December 7: "The Primacy of Perception," Duane Davis, UNC Asheville associate professor of philosophy

-- January 11: "Experience of Dealing with Death," Don Emon, the Institute of Applied Philosophy program chair

-- February 1: "Eastern Reflections on Experience," Keya Maitra, UNC Asheville assistant professor of philosophy

-- March 1: "Experience Painting," Brian Butler, UNC Asheville assistant professor of philosophy

-- April 5: "Religious Experiences," Gordon Wilson, UNC Asheville Philosophy Department chair and professor

-- May 3: Presentations by UNC Asheville students
