UNC Asheville to Observe International Education WeekAs set by U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, the fifth annual International Education Week will be observed worldwide November 15-19. UNC Asheville’s International Studies Program will join the celebration by hosting a variety of programs designed to highlight the benefits of international education and exchange and to strengthen the bridges of international understanding. Events are free and open to the public. ** UNC Asheville students will hold a poster session featuring the work of 19 United Nations agencies and organizations from 12:30-3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in Karpen Hall lobby. Featured agencies will include World Meteorological Organization, the World Food Programme, United Nations Children’s Fund and many more. ** A reception and exhibition of international photos taken by UNC Asheville students, faculty and staff will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library Glasshouse. Photos will be on display in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library’s Cafe Ramsey through the remainder of the semester. ** UNC Asheville political science Professor Bill Sabo will discuss "The Public, the Election, and the United States’ Approach to the World" at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in UNC Asheville Reuter Center Chestnut Ridge Room. Sabo, who is an expert on the American presidency and domestic political science, is a favorite regional speaker and media commentator. ** An international campus-community potluck will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library Glasshouse. Guests are invited to bring their favorite international dish to share. This event is co-sponsored by UNC Ashevilles’ International Studies Program, UNC Asheville’s World Affairs Club and the WNC World Affairs Council. ** Alex Huang, UNC Asheville Atmospheric Sciences Department chair and professor, will discuss "Hurricane Season 2004: Anomaly, Cyclical Pattern, or Harbringer of Global Warming?" at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in UNC Asheville’s Owen Conference Center room 305. ** The "Welcome to My World" series programs will feature displays and informal discussions with many of UNC Asheville’s international students in the University’s Karpen Hall lobby. The displays will include products, currency, maps, pictures, artifacts and presentations from various cultures. Events include: -- Students from Egypt, Guatemala, Hungary, Indonesia and Lebanon will share information from 12:20-2:20 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16. -- Students from Colombia, France, Great Britain, Honduras, Hong Kong, Japan and Moldova will present cultural information from 12:20-2:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17. -- The final event will feature information presented by students from Brazil, Costa Rica, Curacao, Finland and Indonesia from 12:20-2:20 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18.
