Samuel A. Floyd Jr. to Give 2004 Dorr Endowed LectureSamuel A. Floyd Jr. director emeritus and consultant for the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College in Chicago, will discuss "InterArts Inquiry and the Black Expressive Arts" at noon Tuesday, April 6, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. The talk is the 2004 lecture in UNCA's Laurence and Joyce Dorr series "Aesthetics: Thinking Beyond Experience." The event is free and open to the public. Floyd is currently the John Hope Franklin Fellow at the National Humanities Center in North Carolina. He is the author of several books, including "Black Music in the United States," "Black Music Biography: An Annotated Bibliography" and "Black Music in the Harlem Renaissance," which received the 1992 Irving Lowens Award. Floyd also served as editor-in-chief for the "International Dictionary of Black Composers." He has received grants from several foundations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Rockefeller Foundation. The lecture series has been made possible by a gift form Laurence and Joyce Dorr, UNCA emeriti professors. Laurence served as vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, chair of the Philosophy Department and professor in the Humanities Program. Joyce designed, directed and chaired the UNCA music program. She was an instructor in the Music Department as well as the Arts and Ideas Program. Their endowed lecture series seeks to promote philosophical reflection on the arts.
