UNC Asheville to Host Talk on the Future of Weapons of Mass DestructionAvner Cohen, senior research fellow at the Center for International Security Studies at the University of Maryland, will give a talk on "The Future of Weapons of Mass Destruction" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at UNC Asheville’s Owen Conference Center. During his talk, Cohen will discuss recent developments regarding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Iran and Libya and will consider short- and long-term solutions to address the problem. The lecture is held in conjunction with UNC Asheville’s Teaching Nonproliferation Summer Institute. The event is free and open to the public. Considered the leading expert on Israel and the bomb, Cohen is the author of "The Nuclear Age as Moral History," "Israel and the Bomb" and most recently "The Last Israeli Taboo." He has held positions at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Defense and Arms Control Studies Program’s Project on Nuclear Arms Control in the Middle East. From 1987-88 Cohen was a research fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, where he developed the notion of "opaque nuclear proliferation."
