UNC Asheville to Screen Emmy-Nominated Documentary "Blue Vinyl" October 21UNC Asheville will screen the Emmy-nominated documentary, "Blue Vinyl," at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, in UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture Hall. A discussion will follow. The event is free and open to the public. "Blue Vinyl" chronicles the journey of Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand and co-director Daniel B. Gold as they travel to America's vinyl manufacturing capital in search of answers about the potential harmful effects of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The humorous but sobering and personal exploration of the relationship between consumers and the PVC manufacturing industry features Helfand's parents as they decide to renovate the exterior of their home with vinyl siding. "Blue Vinyl" was nominated for a Best Documentary and Best Research Emmy and was named Best Environmental Feature Film at the Los Angeles Activist Film Festival. The film was also named as the Documentary Award Winner for Excellence in Cinematography at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. The event is sponsored by the UNC Asheville's Cultural and Special Events.
