UNCA to Host "Women's Voices in War Zones" ProgramUNC Asheville will host "Women’s Voices in War Zones" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in UNCA’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. The event is free and open to the public. The focus of the event will be the reading of selected prize-winning short essays from an international women’s writing competition sponsored by Women’s World and The Nation Institute. More than 290 entries were received from 45 countries in answer to the questions "Do you live in a war zone or state of terror? Is it personal or public?" UNCA students and faculty members will read selections submitted from various countries, including Thailand, Colombia and the United States. Special guest speakers include, Sandra Brown, a Colombian-American who will give a personal account of living in a war zone, and Catherine Hunter, who is riding across the United States on horseback to raise awareness of peace issues. A panel of UNCA students and faculty members will facilitate a discussion and question-and-answer session with the speakers. "Women’s Voices in War Zones" is sponsored by the UNCA Women’s Studies Program and the WNC Peace Coalition. For more information, call the UNCA Women’s Studies Program at 828/251-6122.
