UNCA Hosts Performance of "The Vagina Monologues;"
Proceeds to Benefit Helpmate of Buncombe, Madison Counties
UNC Asheville's Women Acting in Liberation student group will host a
performance of the award-winning play "The Vagina Monologues" at
7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, and at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, in
UNCA's Humanities Lecture Hall. Admission is $5 suggested donation and all
proceeds will benefit Helpmate, an organization that works to prevent and
end violence towards women.
UNCA's production, featuring a cast of UNCA students and faculty, is
staged in cooperation with the V-Day Campaign. This annual campaign allows
communities to produce the show royalty-free to raise money for groups
working to stop violence against women.
Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" gives voice to a chorus
of poignant, brave, highly original and thoroughly human stories. Based on
interviews with a diverse group of women - from a Long Island antique
dealer to a Bosnian refugee - the play explores the humor, pain, wisdom,
mystery and excitement of women's bodies.
This Obie Award-winning play has been called "a bona fide
phenomenon" by the New York Times and "a work of art and a piece
of cultural history" by Variety.
