UNCA to Host "Soup and Stories for the Soul"
UNC Asheville will host "Soup and Stories for the Soul" on Sunday, Nov. 2, in UNCA’s Reuter Center. This two-part event features lunch and stories at noon, followed by performances by two professional storytellers at 2 p.m. Both events are recommended for adult and teen audiences. The noon event offers an opportunity to settle in with a bowl of hot soup and listen to community members swap stories at the open mic. Those interested in telling at this event should call Laura Facciponti, UNCA assistant professor of drama and event organizer, at 828/251-6686 to sign up. The 2 p.m. performance features seasoned storytellers Lloyd Arneach and Becky Stone sharing sacred tales from their families, cultures and religions. An enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, Arneach learned his first legends from two storytelling uncles. Presented in a humorous, informative and moving style, Arneach tells stories ranging from the "old stories" of the Cherokee to contemporary tales. He resides on the North Carolina Cherokee reservation. A native of Philadelphia, Stone is well known for her storytelling in local libraries, schools, churches and festivals. She is a member of the readers’ theater group, Thrice-Told Storytellers, and has performed WNC history-based story programs regionally through the Center for Diversity Education. Admission is $5 per event or $8 for both. Tickets are available at the door or may be purchased in advance at the Reuter Center office. Call the Reuter Center at 828/251-6140 or Facciponti at 828/251-6686 to reserve advance tickets by phone. "Soup and Stories for the Soul" is sponsored by UNCA’s Cultural and Special Events Committee, Drama Department, Education Department and the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement. Media Contacts:
