UNCA Hosts "Score for Scholarships" Basketball Shootout
Competition;
Funds to Benefit UNCA Foundation Scholarship Drive
UNC Asheville's Development Office will host the "Score for Scholarships" basketball shootout competition from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in UNCA's Justice Center. This new venture will raise funds to benefit the UNCA Foundation scholarship drive, which provides scholarship funds for UNCA students.
"The UNCA Foundation Board scholarship committee is excited to introduce this new event to the Asheville area community," said LaVoy Spooner, UNCA Foundation Board of Directors member and co-chair of the annual scholarship drive committee. "We hope that members of the community will take advantage of this opportunity to spend some time on campus, have some fun, and support the university's scholarship fund."
Five divisions for competition are available: men's and women's ages 45 and older, men's and women's ages 19-44, and co-ed with no age restrictions. Teams must consist of two or three players. College and professional players are ineligible to participate. High school basketball players should check with their athletics director or coach regarding participation.
Each team will be given 90 seconds to rack up points. Points range from a lay-up worth one point to 50 points for a successful half-court shot. The top team in each division will win a $150 cash prize.
A special VIP competition will be held from noon-12:30 p.m. Local celebrity teams will vie for bragging rights; no cash prizes will be given in this competition.
The entry fee is $60 per team. Registration deadline is Friday, April 18. All entry fees are non-refundable and tax-deductible.
