Sons of Steel Performs at UNCA's 21st Annual Concerts on the Quad Series July 14

Steel drum rhythms will be the focus as the Sons of Steel take the stage from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, in the seventh installment of UNC Asheville’s popular Concerts on the Quad series. The concert is free, and weather permitting, will take place on the Quad. In the event of rain, the performance will move to Lipinsky Auditorium, with shows at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. to seat as many patrons as possible.

Produced by steel drum giant Andy Narell, Sons of Steel is a high-energy steel drum band. Ranging in ages from 11 to 22, this band of young men have opened for Jimmy Buffett, Lauryn Hill and Busta Rhymes and have toured with legendary reggae band the Wailers.

UNCA's Concerts on the Quad brings fun to the entire family. The public is invited to bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs. With between 1,000-3,000 people attending each concert, lawn-chair seating will be separate from blanket seating in order to preserve sight lines; please look for signage when arriving on the Quad.

New this year is Café a la Quad. Gourmet sandwiches, snacks, beverages, iced coffee and Sweet Heaven ice cream will be on sale for concert patrons from 6-8 p.m. Pizza will also be available.

The final concerts of the series are the Asheville performances of the 20th annual Folkmoot USA festival held in Lipinsky Auditorium on July 19-20. Folkmoot is the only ticketed event in the series. General admission tickets range from $15-$20 and half-price for children ages 12 and under. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Sons of Steel concert or from UNCA's Office of Student Life by calling 828/232-5000.
