Scholarship Pilot Program Benefits
Super Saturday Minority Students

Ten Asheville City Schools students will attend UNC Asheville's Super Saturday Program on scholarships this spring thanks to the joint effort of the Asheville City Schools Foundation, Asheville City Schools and UNCA's Office of Special Academic Programs.

The scholarship pilot program targets underserved primary and middle school students, and provides both tuition and transportation to the six-week program. While UNCA is able to provide some scholarship funds, the pilot program provides an additional 15 scholarships for students identified as academically gifted and with financial need, said Elaine Fox, Special Academic Programs director.

"It is gratifying to have these new students join us and to work as a team with the Asheville City Schools Foundation and Asheville City Schools to help meet these students' needs," Fox said.

Asheville City Schools Foundation, which already offers scholarships and grants for Asheville City Schools employees and for graduating Asheville High seniors, is looking forward to this new endeavor.

"We are pleased to be involved in a collaborative effort to provide this kind of educational experience to minority and underserved students," said Kathi Ballard, Asheville City Schools Foundation executive director. "If the pilot program is successful, we hope to expand it for the spring term in 2004."

UNCA's Super Saturday Program, now in its 16th year, provides gifted, creative and motivated 3rd-8th graders with high-interest, hands-on opportunities to explore new ideas and broaden perspectives. Classes range from science and computers to drama and outdoor adventure skills. Classes, offered in six-week segments each spring and fall, are taught by UNCA faculty members and upper-level students, outstanding public school teachers and other professionals. Some 300 students attend each term.
