Dr. Afaf Omer

Afaf Omer, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology at UNC Asheville, has been named director of UNCA's Africana Studies Program.

Omer has also been named a Fulbright Scholar and will spend this academic year at the University of Qatar in Doha, the country's capital. There she will teach courses on women's reproductive health and women's studies, as well as conducting her own research. She is an expert in population studies.

John Wood, Ph.D., an assistant professor of sociology at UNCA, will serve as interim director of the program while Omer is away.

Omer joined UNCA in 1995. She holds a master's degree and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Michigan. She recently gave a keynote address, "Women's Rights are Human Rights," at the National Sudanese Women's Convention in Khartoum.

UNCA's interdisciplinary Africana Studies Program explores the roles of Black people in society through courses in political science, sociology, literature, cultural anthropology, mass communication and music.
