Six November Concerts

UNC Asheville's Music Department continues its fall concert series with six November concerts, featuring jazz, percussion and choral music. All concerts are open to the public.

The UNCA Jazz Ensembles will present vocal and instrumental selections at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, in UNCA's Lipinsky Auditorium. The program will feature a selection of jazz standards and contemporary jazz compositions performed by students. The three jazz combos will perform under the direction of David Wilken, Rick Willey and Tom Coppola. A $5 admission fee will be charged at the door.

Under the direction of Byron Hedgepeth, the UNCA Percussion Ensemble will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at UNCA's Lipinsky Auditorium. A concert highlight will be the performance of "Bomba," which incorporates brake drums, temple blocks, a flower pot and a thundersheet. This concert will also offer a smaller percussion group that will perform more advanced pieces, including "Rajah" by George Hamilton Green and "Double Music" by Lou Harrison and John Cage. A $5 admission fee will be charged at the door.

A benefit concert for Elsa O'Farrell will be performed by pianist Lillian Buss Pearson at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in UNCA's Lipinsky Auditorium. Donations will be collected at the door to help with O'Farrell's medical expenses during cancer treatment. O'Farrell, UNCA adjunct music instructor, has been on the UNCA faculty for 10 years and has continued to teach while receiving treatment. The concert program of classical music will include selections from Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy and Chopin.

The UNCA Concert Band and String Ensembles will perform in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at UNCA's Lipinsky Auditorium. The 16 String Ensemble musicians will present works by Handel, Telemann and Holst. The Concert Band will perform under the direction of Earl Sachais and the String Ensemble will perform under the direction of Vance Reese. A $5 admission fee will be charged at the door.

At 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, the University Singers and University String Quartet will hold a concert at the Basilica of St. Lawrence, 97 Haywood St., downtown Asheville.
