UNCA Music Department Wraps Up SeasonUNC Asheville’s Music Department will wrap up its performance season with two concerts featuring student and community talent. Both concerts will take place in Lipinsky Auditorium. General admission is $5. The UNCA Concert Band and University Singers will perform together at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4. Under the direction of Jacqueline Mattingly, the Concert Band will perform selections, including "Westwood Overture," "Hosts of Freedom" and "Big-Beat Dixieland Concerto." Directed by Chuck Taft, the University Singers will present American spirituals, Scottish folk tunes and traditional shaker hymns, among other choral pieces. The UNCA Jazz Ensembles and UNCA Jazz Lab Big Band take center stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8. The 17-piece Lab Band, directed by Tim Haden, will feature many of the area’s outstanding jazz musicians and will spotlight modern jazz standards and original compositions and arrangements. Ensemble I, under the direction of Rich Willey, consists of three horns and four rhythm instruments. Ensemble II, under the direction of Tom Coppola, includes two singers, piano, bass, drums and percussion. Both will perform a variety of jazz styles.
