Regional Mathematics Competition Held at UNCA May 1

Some 52 middle and high school students from 25 schools competed in the Western Regional State Mathematics Finals on Thursday, hosted for the 14th year by UNC Asheville. This event is held each spring to encourage students to excel in mathematics. In order to be eligible to participate, students had to place in a regional qualifying contest.

The Eastern and Central Regional Finals were also held today in Rocky Mount and Greensboro. The exams were coordinated so that all results could be pooled and statewide winners determined later this week, according to Lothar Dohse, UNCA mathematics professor, who coordinated the event for the western end of the state.

In the Western Regional Competition, the winners, in the order they finished, were:

Algebra I --Tyler E. Smith, Flat Rock Middle School; Kyle Johnson, Cane Creek Middle School; Robby R. Finley, Valley Springs Middle School; Rachel E. Powell, Northview Middle School; Charles R. Fort, Valley Springs Middle School; Tina M. Evans, North Buncombe Middle School; Michael C. Dickerson, North Buncombe Middle School; Megan E. Heysham, Valley Springs Middle School; Alicia D. Rhodes, North Buncombe Middle School; and Joshua M. Lowman, C. H. Tuttle Middle School.

Algebra II -- Katie Jordan, Carolina Day School; Amelia S. Wallace, Asheville High School; Arpit Gupta, Carolina Day School; Thomas Manier, Tuscola High School; Kayla Anderson, Enka High School; Katie J. Rybacki, A. C. Reynolds High School; Sarah Rhodes, Cannon School School; Daniel Reich, David W. Butler High School; Gavin Boggs, A. C. Reynolds High School; and Alecia C. Janeiro, A. C. Reynolds High School.
