UNC Asheville will host an evening with Pulitzer-Prize winning poet and writer Maxine Kumin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at UNCA’s Owen Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Kumin is the author of more than 13 books of poetry, including "The Long Marriage," "Connecting the Dots" and "Looking for Luck." In 1998, she suffered a near-fatal carriage-driving accident, which is recorded in her memoir, "Inside the Halo and Beyond: Anatomy of a Recovery." Kumin has also written four novels, three essay collections, a short story collection and an animal rights murder mystery.
In 1973, Kumin was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for "Up Country," her fourth book of poems. She has also received the Aiken Taylor Prize, the Poets’ Prize and the Ruth E. Lilly Poetry Prize. Kumin served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress before the post was renamed Poet Laureate of the United States. She has also served as poet laureate of New Hampshire and as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow.
Kumin’s visit is sponsored by UNCA’s Creative Writing Program, Cultural and Special Events Committee, Literature Club, Center for Jewish Studies and Rivendell Magazine.
