Klezmer Musician David Krakauer to Perform
at UNCA March 25

David Krakauer
David Krakauer

UNC Asheville will host an evening of music with virtuoso clarinetist David Krakauer at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, in UNCA's Lipinsky Auditorium. The event is sponsored by UNCA's Cultural and Special Events Committee.

Krakauer, who has recently performed at venues such as New York's Symphony Space, will lead an exhilarating concert blend of Klezmer, jazz, funk, experimental and classical music.

Krakauer is known for his mastery of a myriad of styles, including Eastern European Klezmer music, avant-garde, rock, jazz and classical chamber music. He has released several CDs including "The Twelve Tribes" and "A New Hot One," which was awarded France's prestigious Diapason d'Or prize and has been hailed a masterwork by the International Herald Tribune and Jazz Magazine. Krakauer is also involved with the Milken Archive's project on American Jewish music, which is producing a 50 CD series of recordings featuring Krakauer as one of the most significant artists of his generation.

General admission tickets are $18. Tickets may be purchased between 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at UNCA’s Student Life Office, Dining Hall Second Level, room 226, or may be charged by phone by calling 828/232-5000 during the hours listed above. Tickets are also available at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St.

In addition to the concert, Krakauer will hold an interactive Klezmer music workshop from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, March 24. He will also give a lecture and short performance at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 25. Both events will be held in UNCA's Lipinsky Auditorium and are free and open to the public.

These events are partially underwritten by UNCA’s Center for Jewish Studies, UNCA’s Arts and Ideas Program and the Deutsch family in memory of Alfred Deutsch.

For more information, call UNCA's Office of Student Life at 828/232-5000.
