UNC Asheville's North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement elected new steering council officers at a meeting held recently on the UNCA campus. The new officers are: James W. Hegglund, chair; David Stewart, vice chair; and Sandra Taylor, secretary. All three took office in July.
Also at the meeting, Ron Manheimer, NCCCR director, announced the appointment of the Rev. William Whitfield, pastor of St. John (A) Baptist Church in Asheville's Kenilworth community, as community representative, and Joni Comstock, UNCA athletics director and special assistant to the chancellor, as campus representative.
Hegglund, a retired financial executive, has been active in NCCCR and College for Seniors programs since moving to Asheville three years ago. Stewart came to Asheville seven years ago after a career in adult education at the University of Wisconsin and at the American Council on Education in Washington. Taylor has been active in the College for Seniors and several other NCCCR programs since 1999. She moved to Asheville after taking early retirement following a career in public school teaching and teacher training in New York State.
Comstock is starting her fourth year at UNCA. As special assistant to Chancellor Mullen, she heads a task force on intergenerational campus initiatives. Whitfield has served his pastorate for nearly three years. He is retired from Volvo Construction Equipment Co., for which he worked for 31 years.
The Steering Council sets guidelines and directions for operations of the Center for Creative Retirement's many programs for promoting lifelong learning, leadership and community service opportunities for retirement-aged individuals.
