UNCA Offers Creative Writing ClassesUNC Asheville will offer two spring continuing education courses in creative writing. The classes, which will meet on the UNCA campus, are open to writers with an interest in children’s books and character development. Bobbie Pell, a Marshall native, will instruct both classes. Pell holds a master’s degree in English and composition from Western Carolina University and is a professional storyteller. Pell will teach "Creating Unforgettable Characters" from 7-9 p.m. Thursday beginning March 6 in Karpen Hall room 127. This four-week course is available to writers of all levels and will apply practical techniques to stretch the writer’s imagination and breathe life into a story’s characters. Students will also explore the employment of mythic and archetypical personae. Pell will also instruct "Creating Children’s Books" from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays beginning April 1 in Carmichael Hall room 104. This four-week course will present strategies fro picture books and all levels of readership, from easy readers to young adult novels. Course content will focus on word choice, structure for the various formats, and examining current published materials. Students may apply for one continuing education unit (CEU) credit per course. Cost is $60 per class and $15 processing fee for those students who wish to apply for the CEU credit.
