UNCA's Cultural and Special Events Committee and the Department of Mass Communication are co-sponsoring a series of events featuring the work of documentary filmmaker Richard Breyer. All events are free and open to the public.
Breyer's latest project "North of 49" will be screened at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in UNCA's Humanities Lecture Hall. The film examines the arson of a Sikh temple in upstate New York in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. The four teenagers found guilty of the attack claim they burned down the temple because they thought the Sikhs who worshipped there were rejoicing in the terrorism of 9/11. The film focuses on one of the perpetrator's transformation from an ignorant teenager to a young woman prepared to accept and respect those different from herself. A discussion with Breyer will follow the screening.
At 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, Breyer will present "Producing the Documentary," a workshop focusing on the process and challenges of producing documentary motion pictures. The workshop will take place in UNCA's Karpen Hall room 012. The workshop will be moderated by Don Diefenbach, UNCA associate professor of mass communication.
"Documentary as a Social and Political Text" will be the topic of a brown-bag discussion with Breyer on Monday, Nov. 17 from 12-1 p.m. in UNCA's Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. The discussion will be moderated by Ken Betsalel, UNCA chair and associate professor of political science.
For more information, call Don Diefenbach, UNCA associate professor of mass communication, at 828/251-6731.
