Asheville Native Named UNCA Distinguished Staff Member of the Year

Asheville native Brenda Barger, secretary of UNC Asheville's Humanities and Art and Ideas programs, was recently named UNCA Distinguished Staff Member of the Year. She was awarded a $1,000, along with a campus parking permit and a plaque.

Barger received the award based, in part, on faculty and staff nominations. As a member of the Humanities Program, she helps coordinate classes which more than 1,500 students attend each semester. At the ceremony, Barger was also praised for her efforts to help care for an ill

co-worker. Barger organized campus volunteers to help prepare meals and transportation for the co-worker in addition to helping cover the co-worker's duties on campus.

Barger is a member of the Chancellor's Staff Advisory Committee Scholarship Committee, the Holiday Luncheon Committee and the Congress to Campus Program. She also assists with the Head Start Children's Holiday Party.

Lloyd Weinberg, associate director of the Key Center and a music instructor, was runner up and received a certificate and $250.
