UNCA Music Department Hosts Three April Concerts
The UNC Asheville Music Department will host three April concerts on campus this month. All concerts will be held in UNCA's Lipinsky Auditorium. The performances are open to the public.
Under the direction of Samuel Williams, the UNCA Ebony Gospel Choir will perform at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 12. The 25 member group will perform both traditional and contemporary gospel selections. Songs by John Kee, Donald Lawrence and Kirk Franklin will be featured. Admission is $5 at the door.
The UNCA Percussion Ensemble will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 17. The ensemble is under the direction of Byron Hedgepeth, UNCA adjunct assistant professor of music. Concert highlights include "Ostinato Pianissimo" by Henry Cowell, "Three Brothers" by Michael Colgrass, "Sonatina" by Fisher Tull and "Hocket for Henry Cowell" by James Tenney. "Hocket for Henry Cowell" features four bass drums placed around the auditorium, producing a stereo effect. A UNCA premier will be "Third Construction" by John Cage. Admission is $5 at the door.
The popular UNCA Community Jazz Band will perform its 19th annual spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27. Under the direction of UNCA Music Instructor Lloyd Weinberg, this 18-piece Big Band is made up of UNCA students and community musicians. The concert will showcase a variety of musical styles, including arrangements of "Heart and Soul," "When I Fall in Love," "Ol' Man River" and "On Broadway." A donation of $5 will be suggested at the door.
