UNCA Hosts Talk on Post-Apartheid South Africa

UNC Asheville’s Africana Studies Program will host a lecture on "Beyond the Miracle: Politics, Society and the Economy in Post-Apartheid South Africa" at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, at UNCA’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Presenters Mueni Wa Muiu, UNCA visiting assistant professor of political science, and Guy Martin, visiting associate professor of political science, will take stock of what the Mandela and Mbeki administrations have accomplished in South Africa. The plight of historically disadvantaged groups will be a special emphasis.

Muiu holds a doctoral degree from Howard University. She spent more than three years in South Africa completing research for her doctoral dissertation, "Contending Perspectives on South African Nationalism: Late Nationalism and Democracy, 1976-2003."

Martin spent more than three years as project coordinator and chairperson of the HDI Public Administration Forum. This program is a non-governmental organization designed to promote education, training and research in public administration in the 17 historically disadvantaged universities and technical colleges in South Africa. It is based at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa, where Martin also was a visiting professor.
