Asheville Theatre for Young Audiences Offers
After-School Drama Classes
Asheville Theatre for Young Audiences (ATYA) will offer after-school
drama classes September 22-November 14 for students in grades K-12. ATYA
is sponsored by UNC Asheville’s
Drama Department in cooperation with the N.C.
Stage Company (NCSC). Classes will meet Mondays-Thursdays at UNCA
and NCSC, located at 33 Haywood St. in downtown Asheville.
A movement class for grades 3-12 will be held on Mondays. "Musical
Theatre" for grades 4-12 (special permission for younger children)
and "Creative Dramatics" for grades K-2 will be offered on
Tuesdays. A general acting class for grades 6-12 will be held on
Wednesdays and "Acting with Masks" for grades 6-8 on Thursdays.
A conservatory class, available for enrollment by audition only, will
meet twice a week. The course will explore acting Shakespeare, directing,
audition techniques, stage combat, musical theater, technical theater and
production management. Students will wrap up the course by creating and
performing a holiday review December 12-14 on the NCSC stage.
ATYA courses are taught by professional instructors who have many years
of experience working in theater for youth and hold graduate or
undergraduate specialty degrees.
Cost for the conservatory class is $200; all other classes are $80. A
multiple-class discount is available. A nonrefundable registration fee of
$25 per class is required and will be applied to class fees. Payment plans
are available. Class size is limited; early registration is advised.
