UNCA's Writers at Home Series Presents Young Writers

UNC Asheville’s spring 2002 Writers at Home series kicks off with a special reading by local high school students at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. Writers at Home is part of the Great Smokies Writing Program, a consortium of the Western North Carolina writers’ community and UNCA’s Creative Writing Program. The program is free and open to the public.

The young writers program will feature readings by four local high school students. Lynette James, a senior, is president of the writers’ club at Asheville High School. Mollie Dezern is a junior at Asheville High School and serves as editor of the school’s literary magazine. Lauren Northrup, a junior at the Asheville School, attended a writers’ workshop at Brown University last summer and has served as editor of the school’s literary magazine. Asheville School senior Kara Shaffner has participated in a number of writing workshops and has served as editor of the school’s literary magazine.

Other programs in the spring reading series will include readings by the following: Laura Hope-Gill and David Hopes on February 17; Julia Nunnally Duncan and Chrysse Everhart on March 17; Maria Fire and Peggy Millin on April 21; and Kathryn Stripling Byer and Joan Medlicott on May 19. All events will be held at 3 p.m. at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe.
