UNCA's Family Business Forum Hosts Workshop
with Mike Tanner
UNC Asheville’s Family Business Forum will host a breakfast program
with family business leader Mike Tanner from 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March
12, at UNCA’s Owen Conference Center. The event is open to Forum members
and their guests; a limited number of seats are available for family
business owners interested in membership.
Located in Rutherford County, Tanner Industries had its start producing
men’s shirts in 1931 as Doncaster Collar and Shirt Co. In 1958, the
company added the Tanner line of women’s sportswear. Tanner will discuss
his family’s business from its beginnings in 1931 through its recent
divestiture.
Tanner served as executive vice president of the Tanner Companies as
well as president of the Doncaster Division of the Tanner Companies. He
holds a bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead
Scholar. Tanner is also a graduate of UNCA’s Master of Liberal Arts
program. He serves on UNCA’s Board of Trustees and has also been
involved with the Boy Scouts of America, United Way of Rutherford County
and numerous educational organizations.
UNCA’s Family Business Forum, the first program of its kind in the
region, was developed to enhance the continued viability of family-owned
businesses in the Asheville area. Membership in the forum is open to firms
that have a family member with controlling interest in the business and at
least one family member currently employed in the business. In addition to
seminars and workshops, members will receive current research and articles
on family business issues, a quarterly newsletter, and the opportunity to
network with other family-owned business members who face similar
challenges of perpetuating a family business.
Registration for the workshop is required. For more information or to
register, call Richard Lasher at 828/251-6797, voice box 8003.
