An evening of cool jazz wraps up UNC Asheville’s Concerts on the Quad entertainment series at 7 p.m. Monday, July 15. The show will take place on UNCA’s quad and is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Tim Haden, the Peggy Lyn-Haden Jazz Octet and the UNCA Jazz Lab Band take center stage with special guest trumpeter Rich Willey. Willey was active on the New York scene from the mid 1980s to the early 1990s, playing a wide range of Latin and jazz gigs, including backing up the legendary vocalist Mel Torme. Last fall, Willey toured with trumpet giant Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau.
Now in its 20th season, Concerts on the Quad series brings free fun to the entire family. The public is invited to bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs. Sandwiches, snacks and cold drinks are sold at each event. With between 500 and 2,000 people attending the concert, lawn-chair seating will be separate from blanket seating in order to preserve sight lines; please look for signage when arriving on the quad. In case of rain, the performances will be held in Lipinsky Auditorium.
Two ticketed Folkmoot events will wrap up the season on July 20-21 in UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium. Tickets are on sale now for these two special performances and will also be available at each of the remaining Concerts on the Quad, cash or check only.
To charge Folkmoot tickets by phone or for more information, call UNCA’s Student Life Office at 828/232-5000.
