UNCA to Host NISGUA's Globalizing Justice Fall Tour 2002

UNC Asheville will host a talk by Carlos Humberto Muralles at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at UNCA's Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall. His talk is part of the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) Globalizing Justice Fall Tour. Admission is free but donations will be accepted at the door for Muralles’ travel expenses and the Association for the Promotion and Development of the Community (CEIBA).

Muralles, an agronomist, coordinates a team of 20 people in the Association for the Promotion and Development of the Community (CEIBA) production department. His group works for agriculture projects and agriculture training in alternative agriculture, biodiversity and on the topic of food security.

CEIBA promotes participatory community development on the topics of health agriculture, production, women's involvement and education. The organization works primarily in rural communities in the department of Huehuetenango, located in the mountains of Northwestern Guatemala.

Muralles will discuss genetically modified food, CEIBA and the Plan Puebla Panama. The plan is a 25-year, $10 billion proposal that seeks to physically and commercially connect the southern region of Mexico with the rest of Central America.

This event is co-sponsored by UNCA Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, UNCA Presbyterian Campus Fellowship and Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church.
