UNCA's Family Business Forum Hosts Workshop with
Drew S. Mendoza

UNC Asheville’s Family Business Forum will host a workshop on "Non-Family Managers in a Family Business" with family business expert Drew S. Mendoza from 8:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, Sept. 5, in the Vanderbilt Room of The Inn on Biltmore Estate. The program is open to Forum members and their guests; a limited number of seats are available for family business owners interested in membership.

Mendoza, a principal and president of The Family Business Consulting Group in Marietta, Ga., was founding director of the Loyola University Chicago Family Business Center, long recognized as a leading think tank on issues unique to business owning families. He is a member of the Family Firm Institute's board, and an associate editor of its scholarly journal. As a consultant, Mendoza specialized in working with sibling and cousin owner/manager teams and with large shareholder groups.

His presentation will examine all aspects of the non-family manager’s position within the family business, including advice for the owning family and management as well as the non-family manager. Compensation options, management issues, ground rules for promotion and function and dysfunctional roles for non-family managers will also be discussed.

UNCA’s Family Business Forum, the first program of its kind in the region, was developed to enhance the continued viability of family-owned businesses in the Asheville area. Membership in the forum is open to firms that have a family member with controlling interest in the business and at least one family member currently employed in the business. In addition to seminars and workshops, members will receive current research and articles on family business issues, a quarterly newsletter, and the opportunity to network with other family-owned business members who face similar challenges of perpetuating a family business.

Registration for the workshop is required. For more information or to register, call Richard Lasher at 828/251-6797, voice box 8003.
