UNCA to Host National Mathematics Conference April 5-7UNC Asheville will host the Midwest Dynamical Systems Conference April 5-7 for some 150 mathematics scholars. Now in its 30th year, this semi-annual conference focuses on the mathematics field of chaos theory. Usually held at larger research universities, UNCA is pleased to be the first liberal arts college to host the conference. Ten speakers from the United States, China and Mexico will deliver talks on a variety of subjects. Lectures will cover topics from "Entropy of Flows" to "Restricted Three-Body Models in Celestial Mechanics." The conference kicks off with a keynote address by Fields Medalist winner Stephen Smale, professor emeritus of mathematics at the University of California Berkeley. Smale’s talk on "The Evolution of Language" will be given at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, in UNCA’s Humanities Lecture Hall. It is free and open to the public.
