UNCA Student Selected for Prestigious Summer Science InstituteUNC Asheville sophomore psychology major Carolina Mann, 19, has been selected to participate in the American Psychological Association’s prestigious Summer Science Institute next month at Columbia University. Mann, a Charlotte native, was one of only 32 undergraduates selected from 500 applicants from across the country. "I am really looking forward to the graduate-style experience that I will be offered there in terms of laboratory work and research," said Mann, who plans on pursuing a graduate degree in clinical psychology. Melissa Himelein, associate professor of psychology, drew Mann’s attention to the program and encouraged her to apply. "Caroline is an absolute delight as a student," said Himelein. "She demonstrates a hunger to learn that has a very positive effect on the whole class." Led by top researchers in psychology, participants in the institute will examine the intellectual, personal and social process of scientific inquiry of psychological research. UNCA’s psychology department offers programs for majors and minors in the field. A degree involves study in several areas of the broader discipline of psychological development, experience and behavior. The course offerings in the department have been designed to facilitate students’ acquiring the skills and information necessary for a thorough and representative understanding of psychology. Students are encouraged to seek research or field work experience appropriate to their interests and career objectives. Media Contacts:
