"Travels
with Walter and His Dog, Little Pocahontas," an
exhibition of 35 photographs by early 20th century photographer
Walter Layman, will be on view October 1-31 at UNC Asheville’s Blower’s
Gallery. The exhibit is composed of images from the private collection of
Nancy Hofmann, Layman’s granddaughter and a UNCA staff member.
Layman, a prominent photographer of Native Americans, studied at
the Cincinnati Art Academy, the Art Students League in New York
and the American Art Association of Paris. After working as an artist and
illustrator in Cincinnati and New York, Layman followed his
special interest in documenting the fast-disappearing Native American way
of life. With his canine companion Little Pocahontas, Layman traveled
across the United States photographing members of many different tribes.
His photographs, which were created between
1910-30, appeared in The National Geographic Magazine.
Blowers Gallery, located on the main floor of UNCA’s Ramsey
Library, is open during regular library hours. For hours of operation,
call UNCA’s Ramsey Library at 828/251-6546.
