UNCA Music Department Kicks Off Spring Concert SeasonA potpourri of classical Indian music, jazz and chamber music kick off the UNC Asheville Music Department’s spring concert season. All performances are open to the public; a $5 donation is requested at the door for concerts at UNCA. ** As part of the Grove Park Inn’s annual Jazz Festival, UNCA’s Jazz Lab Big Band will perform at noon Saturday, Feb. 2, and UNCA’s Jazz Ensemble will play at noon Sunday, Feb. 3. Both performances will take place in Grove Park Inn’s Great Hall under the direction of Tim Haden. ** An ensemble of musicians will perform a South Indian classical music concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The group, made up of voice, violin, mrdangam and tambura, is sponsored by UNCA’s Humanities Student Association, Western Carolina University’s music department and the Horowitz Foundation. This concert is free. ** Join UNCA music faculty Judi Lampert, flute; Jacqueline Mattingly, horn and Elsa O’Farrell, piano for an afternoon of chamber music at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in UNCA’s Humanities Lecture Hall. They will be joined by Western Carolina University faculty Alan Mattingly, horn and Lillian Buss Pearson, pianist. ** UNCA’s Big Band Jazz Festival will take center stage at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium. UNCA’s Jazz Lab Big Band will be joined by the University of South Carolina’s and the University of Tennessee’s jazz bands. Several great soloists will be featured. ** CANCELED -- Under the direction of Jacqueline Mattingly, the UNCA Band and String Ensembles will perform instrumental music at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27.
