Non-Violence Advocate and Author to Speak at UNCA

Father Elias Chacour, a non-violence advocate and noted author, will discuss a "Vision for Peace and Justice in Israel and Palestine" at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in UNC Asheville's Owen Conference Center. This event is presented by UNCA's chapter of Amnesty International and is free and open to the public.

Chacour's work is directed at breaking the cycle of violence in Israel and Palestine. He established the Mar Elias Educational Institutions, which serve as sites for developing mutual understanding between youths of different religions and ethnic backgrounds. Chacour was presented the World Methodist Peace Award in 1994 and Niwan Peace Prize in 2001. He was also nominated three times for the Noble Peace Prize. In addition to these achievements he was proclaimed Man of the Year in Israel in May 2001.

He has also authored several books. "Blood Brothers," which recounts his childhood and early years as a priest, has been translated into 28 languages. "We Belong to the Land: The Story of a Palestinian Israeli Who Lives for Peace and Reconciliation" includes stories of his work in the development of Mar Elias College, and has been translated into 11 languages.
