Scholar Elizabeth Bartman to Discuss Roman Military Armor
October 15 at UNCA

Author and scholar Elizabeth Bartman will explore one of the most exotic pieces of the Roman soldier’s armor, the face helmet, in her talk at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in UNC Asheville’s Owen Conference Center. The talk, hosted by UNCA, is co-sponsored by UNCA’s Classics Department and the American Institute of Archaeology’s Western Carolina Society. The event is free and open to the public.

Some 120 varieties of this finely wrought, specialized type of armor, dating from the first to third centuries, have been found in archeological contexts from Scotland to Syria. Bartman’s talk, "The Mock Face of Battle," will examine the personal and military aspects of the face helmets, which came to be a standard element of Roman culture and spectacle in the imperial age.

Discussion and refreshments will follow her talk. For more information, call Dorothy Dvorsky Rohner, UNCA assistant classics professor, at 828/251-6295.
