UNCA Music Department Continues Spring Concert SeasonChoral music, percussion and jazz will highlight the UNC Asheville Music Department’s April concert lineup. All performances are open to the public; a $5 donation is requested at the door for concerts at UNCA. ** Under the direction of Chuck Taft, the UNCA Community Chorus will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the Haywood Performing Arts Center in Waynesville. The program will feature a concert version of Rodgers and Hart’s "Babes in Arms." Songs from the musical includes "The Lady is a Tramp," "Where or When" and "My Funny Valentine." Members from the University Band and String Ensemble, under the direction of Jacqueline Mattingly, will accompany the chorus. Tickets will be $8 at the door. ** A repeat performance of the "Babes in Arms" concert will be given at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium. ** The UNCA Percussion Ensemble will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in UNCA Lipinsky Hall room 018. Under the direction of Byron Hedgepeth, the group will perform "Music for Pieces of Wood" by Steve Reich, "Toccata" by Carlos Chavez and "March for Two Pairs of Kettledrums" by Andre and Jacques Philodor. A special highlight of the program will be a performance of "Ionisation" by Edgard Varese. Composed in 1927, "Ionisation" was the first concert piece written solely for percussion ensemble. Some of the instruments include fire engine sirens, tam-tams, gongs, bass drums and anvils. ** The final April concert will be the 18th annual UNCA Community Jazz Band spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 28. Directed by Lloyd Weinberg, this popular event will feature guest vibraphonist Paul Babelay. The concert will showcase a variety of musical styles, including arrangements of "Satin Doll," "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "West Side Story."
