Poet Reggie Gibson to Perform at UNCA's Martin Luther King Day Celebration ProgramPoet, percussionist, actor and activist Reggie Gibson will speak at UNC Asheville’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Program at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Humanities Lecture Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Gibson’s brand of performance poetry has been called "rhythmistical" because of his combination of the time honored mystical weaving of the African griot tradition with the often hard-edged rhythms of the African experience in America. Gibson’s work gained mainstream attention in the acclaimed New Line Cinema film "love jones." The 1998 winner of the individual competition in the National Poetry Slam, Gibson has toured with the ChicagoMask Ensemble performing poetic adaptations of common myths from around the world. His first full-length manuscript "Storms Beneath The Skin" was released in 1999. For more information, call UNCA’s Multicultural Student Affairs Office at 828/251-6671. Media Contacts:
