UNC Asheville to Hold First Spring Symposium on Undergraduate Research
and Creativity April 25

More than 80 UNC Asheville students will present original research and creative expression at the university’s Spring Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creativity from 1-6 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in Karpen Hall. This new campuswide event will serve as an annual showcase of student work. The symposium, including the poster session in Karpen Hall lobby, is free and open to the public.

"Many of the students have also presented their original research at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research and the North Carolina General Assembly’s Research in the Capital Symposium earlier this year," said Katherine Whatley, UNCA Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. "But we’re hoping that this additional campus symposium continues for many years to come as a celebration of student achievement at the end of the academic year."

These interdisciplinary projects represent a wide range of topics, such as integration and the Asheville YWCA, transitional living facilities for spinal cord injury patients, gender stereotypes in popular men’s magazines, learning styles and their effect on student performance, and violence in our schools. The symposium is part of UNCA’s Undergraduate Research Program. The program aims to provide students with a wide variety of research, scholarly and creative opportunities that support and supplement other educational activities. UNCA’s Undergraduate Research Program encourages students and faculty mentors to engage in the complete active research process, including design and implementation of projects and dissemination of results.
