| For Immediate Release July 20, 2001 North Carolina Teaching Fellows Hold Annual Conference at UNCA Four hundred future teachers will attend the annual North Carolina Senior Teaching Fellows Conference at UNC Asheville July 20-22. Fifteen UNCA Teaching Fellows will be among the group. Rising college seniors will participate in educational seminars, meet with educators and hear talks by nationally recognized teachers. Current Walt Disney National Teacher of the Year Ron Clark will address the group Friday and current National Teacher of the Year Michele Forman will speak on Sunday. Students awarded membership to the competitive North Carolina Teaching Fellows program have met high academic standards in high school. North Carolina high school seniors are eligible to apply for this $26,000 scholarship in the fall of their senior year. At UNCA, the scholarship funds nearly all of the college expenses, a trip to a large American city each winter and a special summer course in Cambridge, England. In return, recipients of the scholarship agree to teach in North Carolina schools for four years after graduation. More than 5,600 students have completed the program statewide; 68 Teaching Fellows are currently enrolled at UNCA.For more information about the Teaching Fellows Program at UNCA, contact Brenda Hopper, Teaching Fellows Program director, at 828/251-6901 or visit the Web site.
