North Carolina Junior Teaching Fellows Hold Annual Conference at UNCA

Four hundred future teachers will attend the annual North Carolina Junior Teaching Fellows Conference at UNC Asheville July 27-29. Fifteen UNCA Teaching Fellows will be among the group.

Rising college juniors will participate in seminars, meet with educators and hear talks based on the theme of "Exploring the Power of Diversity Through Conversation." Former UNC Public Television educator Mary Cay Corr will speak Friday evening. Motivational speakers Glen Walter and Captain Jake Greene will address the group Sunday morning. A highlight of the program will be a screening and panel discussion of "Community Voices: Something Common," a film that addresses diversity issues pertaining to race, class, religion, sexual orientation and language in nine North Carolina schools.

Students awarded membership to the competitive North Carolina Teaching Fellows program have met high academic standards in high school. North Carolina high school seniors are eligible to apply for this $26,000 scholarship in the fall of their senior year. At UNCA, the scholarship funds nearly all of the college expenses, a trip to a large American city each winter and a special summer course in Cambridge, England. In return, recipients of the scholarship agree to teach in North Carolina schools for four years after graduation. More than 5,600 students have completed the program statewide; 68 Teaching Fellows are currently enrolled at UNCA.
