Producer Steven Fischler to Screen "From Swastika to Jim Crow"
at UNCA March 26

Producer Steven Fischler will screen and discuss his hour-long documentary "From Swastika to Jim Crow" at 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, at UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Through interviews, archival news footage and home movies, "From Swastika to Jim Crow" details a little-known and almost-forgotten chapter of American history. Forced out of Germany and Austria, many Jewish intellectuals fled to America from Nazi Europe. Confronted with anti-Semitism at American universities and a public distrust of foreigners, a surprising number sought refuge in traditionally Black Southern colleges. These scholars came to form lasting relationships with their students and went on to significantly impact the communities in which they worked and lived.

The program is sponsored by UNCA’s Center for Jewish Studies, Africana Studies Program, Africana Studies Club, African American Student Association, Jewish Students Association, the Bob and Carol Deutsch Family, Cinematique, the DoubleTake Documentary Film Festival and the Horowitz Fund.
