N.C. Center for Creative Retirement Launches Free Computer Literacy Classes

UNC Asheville’s N.C. Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) will offer free computer literacy programs to underserved adults, ages 50 and over, thanks to a $10,000 grant from Smith Barney, the financial services company, through its Citigroup Foundation. According to Dan Scannell, vice-president and branch manager for Smith Barney offices in Asheville and Hendersonville, the year-long program "will help to narrow the digital divide between the information rich and poor among senior adults." The project is designed to reach low income and minority seniors.

Starting this fall, a series of six-week long courses will be taught by skilled UNCA undergraduates who will be trained and supervised by campus experts. Participants will learn basic computer skills, how to use e-mail and the Internet. They will also find out how to access free public computers in the area.

"The project is consistent with UNCA’s mission to be a multigenerational campus," said NCCCR Director Ron Manheimer. "We’re thrilled that UNCA students will get to share in the rich lives of older people while assisting them in learning a new skill that will help them stay connected."

For more information, contact UNCA’s NCCCR Office at 828/251-6140.
