| For Immediate Release November 6, 2001 UNCA's Fourth Annual S. Dexter Squibb Lecture Series UNC Asheville’s fourth annual S. Dexter Squibb Lecture Series will focus on "Industry and the University" November 15-16. The featured speaker, James W. Mitchell, vice president of Communications Materials Technology Research Laboratory at Lucent Technology’s Bell Labs and the 1993 Black Engineer of the Year, will give two public talks. The lectures are free and open to the public. At 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, Mitchell will discuss the globalization of economy and its influence on the synergistic interactions between corporations, academia and the community. The talk will be held in Robinson Hall room 125. Mitchell’s second talk will focus on results of curiosity-driven academic research that are used by industry for advancing technology at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Nov.16, in Karpen Hall room 038. The S. Dexter Squibb Endowed Distinguished Lectureship brings well-known scientists to the UNCA campus to give public and campus lectures, and meet with UNCA students, faculty and high school science students and administrators. The lecture series honors S. Dexter Squibb, former UNCA Chemistry Department Chair. Squibb joined the faculty in 1964 and was instrumental in developing UNCA’s Chemistry Department into a certified four-year program. Winner of numerous prestigious chemistry awards, Squibb has written 13 textbooks and received seven National Science Foundation grants.
