UNCA to Celebrate Homecoming Feb. 19-24

A Celebration of the Arts and a wide variety of alumni reunions will highlight UNCA’s 2001 homecoming celebration Feb. 19-24. Some 17 campus events will be held during the week-long celebration, which kicks off at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, with a Love Jones poetry event in the Highsmith Center Lounge.

"This year’s homecoming has something for everyone," said Mary Chakales, UNCA Alumni Relations director. "We hope all our alumni come out to enjoy the festivities and basketball games. It’s a great way to rekindle old friendships and to become reacquainted with their alma mater." Ten reunions are schedule throughout Saturday, Feb. 24, including gatherings for Alumni of Color, Ambassadors, MUD 500, Teaching Fellows, Underdog Productions and the Writing Center.

Art Front, a student art group, will host a Celebration of the Arts at noon, Friday, Feb. 23, in the Highsmith Center Coffee House. This special event will showcase art in action as student artists sketch and paint using live models, throw pottery and exhibit finished works.

UNCA’s fifth annual homecoming parade is set to roll along University Heights between the Ramsey Library Parking lots and the Public Safety Office at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23.

UNCA and Winthrop face-off on Saturday, Feb. 24, in the homecoming basketball game. The women’s team play at 3 p.m. followed by the men’s team at 5 p.m. The homecoming court will be presented at half-time of the men’s game. Both games will be played in UNCA’s Justice Center and admission is $6 adults, $4 children.

Festivities wrap up with a formal homecoming dance following the game where the homecoming king and queen will be crowned.

For more information about homecoming events, call UNCA’s Alumni Office at 828/251-6512 or the Highsmith Student Center at 828/251-6584.
