UNCA to Host Philosophy Lecture on the Nature of Evil

UNC Asheville will host a talk on "Evil: A Torture for Philosophy" by Carlos Steel at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in UNCA’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.

Steel will explore the classic philosophical question of evil. The problem of evil has traditionally been understood as a dilemma for theists who maintain that God has the characteristics of being all-good and all-powerful despite the existence of evil in world.

Steel, professor of philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, is completing a one semester appointment as the Harvard University Erasmus Lecturer. This position is held each year by a well-known Dutch or Flanders scholar. Steel is director of the De Wulf-Mansion Centre for Medieval and Ancient Philosophy and is president of the Higher Institute of Philosophy’s Institute for Medieval Studies. He is also a member of the Royal Belgium Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.

For more information, call UNCA’s Philosophy Department at 828/251-6413.
