UNCA Hosts Year-Long Disabilities Studies Video Festival
UNC Asheville’s Office of Liberal Arts Learning and Disability Services kicks off Equal Access: Disabilities Studies Video Festival on Sunday, August 26. The year-long series consists of eight distinguished short videos and documentaries that explore the lives of disabled people.
A series highlight is a discussion led by Simi Linton, a disability scholar and president of Disability/Arts, and the author of “Claiming Disability: Knowledge and Identity.” The discussion follows a screening of “Liebe Perla” (Israel/Germany 1999) at 4:00 p.m. October 9, in UNCA’s Humanities Lecture Hall. This video tells the life story of a Jewish woman and exemplifies the Nazi regime’s treatment of people with disabilities. The other seven screenings will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Whitman Room on the main floor of UNCA’s Ramsey Library. All events are free and open to the public.
-- August 26: “Disability Culture Rap” (U.S. 2000) Cheryl Marie Wade offers a critical look on the meanings of disability.“When Billy Broke His Head” (U.S. 1998) Billy Golfus and David Simpson show the life of disabled people from a humorous viewpoint mixed with politics and individual experience.

the Land of the Deaf” (France 1995) Nicolas Philibert explores deaf life
-- October 21: “Khalfan and Zanzibar” (Zanzibar 2000) Disabled people in Zanzibar, Africa, assert their human rights and speak for themselves. “Stairway to Heaven” (U.S. 1998) Errol Morris presents the portrait of Temple Gradin, an accomplished engineer who lives with autism.
-- November 11: “Best Boy” (U.S. 1979) Ira Whol shows the life of Philly Whol, a 52-year-old man living with a mental disability.
