| For Immediate Release February 13, 2001 N.C. Center for Creative
Retirement Launches An insurance primer, Buddhist history, the War of 1812 and children’s literature are among the many topics offered through the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement’s College for Seniors spring term beginning March 19. The program, for adults age 50 and older, is designed to make learning fun when full-time work is over, says College for Seniors Director Cissie Stevens. Now in its 12th year, the college has no grades or tests and little, if any, homework. Some 42 courses will be offered this spring: 25 will take place at UNCA, 9 will take place at First Baptist Church, eight will take place at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community and one each will take place at the Montford Community Center and Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. As in past terms, traditional liberal arts and a wide variety of computer courses will be offered. This spring session also offers a number of experiential classes, including piano, the art of bonsai, bird watching, tap dancing and yoga. New this term is "Sports and Ethics in Society" taught by Joni Comstock, director of athletics at UNCA. The class will combine short readings, discussion and presentations from many people involved in sports. Other new classes of interest include, "Fun with the Pirates of Penzance," "The Mexican War" and "The Human Side of the Presidency." Courses are taught by UNCA faculty members and peer seniors with expertise in a particular field. College for Seniors classes meet March 19-May 18. The $105 membership fee includes classes, admission to College for Seniors special events, a parking decal, an ID card, UNCA library privileges and publications of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement. For more information, call the College for Seniors at 828/251-6384 or visit their Web site. Media Contacts:
