UNCA Students, Faculty and Staff
The University of North Carolina at Asheville presented academic and leadership awards to UNCA students, faculty and staff members at a ceremony May 2 at the Grove Park Inn. The annual presentation was sponsored by the Office of Student Development and the Student Government Association.
The following awards were presented:
Julienne M. Winner Achievement Award for leadership and scholarship to Donna Sorrells Deweese.
Campuswide Leadership Awards: Presidentís Awards to Angela Berrong and Steven Green; Outstanding Organization of the Year Awards to Bulldog Stompers Clogging Club; Emerging Leader of the Year Awards to Jennifer Bowen, Jonathan Miller, Anne Moukperian and Kevin Skolnik; Outstanding Leader of the Year Awards to Kevin Brinson and Shelly Moss; Outstanding Dedication to Community Service Award to Simona Smalls; Carolyn Briggs Award for Contributions to Expanding an Awareness and Appreciation of Diversity to Joshua Kumm; and Faculty Advisor of the Year Award to Jacqueline Mattingly.
Student Affairs Faculty Appreciation Award to Keith Ray, Health and Fitness Department Chair, and the Student Affairs Staff Appreciation Award to Steve Honeycutt, University Budget Officer.
Art:Awards of Distinction to Mary Aldrich, Maria Andrade, Jennifer Lipsey Edwards, Jonathan Fisher, Cheryl Lore, Madalyn Rogers and Hague Williams.
Athletics: Male Athlete of the Year to Brett Carey; Female Athlete of the Year to Zola Davis; and Scholar Athlete of the Year to Mike Roach.
Atmospheric Sciences: Academic Achievement Award to Brian Lovern and Departmental Service Award to Patrick McKee.
Biology: Harry Henry Johnston Awad for Excellence to Lisa Gonora and Kim Ann Angelton.
Chemistry: American Chemical Society (ACS) Western Carolinas Section and the Chemistry Department Award for Outstanding Senior to Peter Kekenes-Huskey; Most Valuable Senior Award to Stanley Howell; Outstanding Performance in Organic Chemistry Award to Kevin Watt; Outstanding Performance in Analytical Chemistry Awards to Melinda Beaver and Maegan Spencer; Outstanding Performance in General Chemistry Award to Jaya Dorf; Outstanding ACS Student Affiliate Award to Stanley Howell; and Outstanding Accomplishment Awards to Paul Beaton for a Goldwater Scholarship and Peter Kekenes-Huskey for a Fulbright Scholarship.
Classics: Guy Cooper Prize in Classics to Summer Whitson.

Drama: U.S. Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) Award for Best Overall Technician to Danny Tauber; USITT Award for Crosby and Thimble to Danny Tauber; USITT Award for Knot Tying to Jennifer Bowen; and Leadership Awards to Suzanne Cresswell, Michael Armstrong, Michelle Carello, Angela Koon, Dove Engle, Mary McAvoy, Kate Yuhas and Mike Henning.
